D's going to school!

More time for food experimenting, more time for home cleanliness, more time for myself... All of that will soon become a reality as D goes to school next year, Jan 2012. Selfish thoughts aside, I'd like D to learn more too - from school, from teachers and friends. So... It's a win-win situation actually ^~^;;

Just a couple of items more (his school shoes and a handmade name tag by me) and we'll be ready to roll! :D

Lazy lunch for D

Apart from being lazy, I was running out of ideas on D's lunch menu. Having searched the mart through and through, it suddenly dawned upon me - why not give that yummy-looking canned creamy mushroom soup a go?

Smothered toasted wholemeal bread with low fat cream cheese and cut it into 4 strips. D finished them in no time.

Picnic-time!

Inka came up with a great idea to have family picnic one day and the whole idea got me very excited! Attendees would be DD, Inka, Mr. Blockhead, our 'lil people and myself. The date was set and we prayed really hard for good weather. Thankfully, the skies were cloudy with cooling breezes...

Inka prepared a hot favorite for everyone - a non-spicy Nasi Goreng with belachan. It's easy to see why we were all busy helping ourselves round after round, eh?

On my end, things were much simpler - choc chip loaf & milk bread with nutella spread; french toast rolls with mozzarella cheese and another version with peanut butter.

To save myself the embarrassment, I ate most of the bread ^~^;;

Waffles Breakfast

It was a wonderful morning. That prompted me to make something different for my wonderful boys. After ransacking my fridge, I heaved a sigh of relief - I had enough ingredients to make some warm, fluffy waffles for them. Top it with bananas and blueberries, with maple syrup drizzled over. Mmm-mmm!

Jap Chae - Korean Glass Noodle

I have always loved this dish and kept thinking that I'm gonna "replicate" it someday. 3 years flew by. I didn't mean to procrastinate time and again BUT... the thought of having lotsa prep work to be done really puts me off!

Today, I have finally came to conquer my fear. Armed with my recipe book (which I've looked through the recipe umpteen times), I was determined to put my thoughts into action. Following the recipe to a tee, this was the final product which made Mr. Blockhead craved for more :D

The One With Separation Anxiety - ME

We've talked about and tried training D to sleep in his cot since he was 15 months old. Back then, his cot was just right beside me. We would move him over to his cot after he fell asleep on our bed and he always climbed back to sleep with us without fail. We gave up eventually.

Sometime in August, we've discussed about it again. This time, to sleep-train him in his room. It has to be a day without interruptions (without my mom's presence, that is), a day that's after Mr. Blockhead's family visit. Hence, we've decided on 7 Sep 2011, Wed.

I was looking forward to this big day (night, actually). I had lots of mixed emotions, good and bad. When I was putting D to bed for his nap, I felt this extreme sadness welled up in me as I watched him drifted into sleep. All my fond memories of him blabbering, tossing, chuckling, rubbing his sleepy eyes went through my mind. The very thought of me missing these brought tears to my eyes.

What Hot Mama said is very true - It's all part of growing up and although letting go is hard, it's part of our growth as well. And also for us to remind ourselves that though they will start needing us lesser and lesser as they grow, our love for them will only deepen because we are doing what's best for them, rather than what's best for us.

I think I'd cry my heart out when D goes to army...

Banana Choc Chip Mmmuffins

Had been looking forward to this day - Hot Mama and Cutie Pie came over to bake muffins! Woot! I couldn't have done it without so much help from Hot Mama. She's a natural. She has this "thing" with kids. She takes such great care of them like an angel. While waiting for them to come over, I hurriedly prepared whatever necessary for baking the muffins and D was exhilarated to see me running frantically around the house.

When they finally arrived, D screamed in excitement. That was so cute... We wasted no time. Hot Mama and Cutie Pie settled down really quick and D was so fascinated by their presence. Hot Mama wanted to help out in the baking, but me being an amateur, I didn't know how to get her involved except for mashing the bananas.

She's really good with kids. When we finally sat D and Cutie Pie down on high chairs, Hot Mama single-handedly run the show. Literally. She was like hosting a cooking program right out of the TV! The kids enjoyed it and I enjoyed it even more :D

With so much going on, I was relieved that the muffins turned out fine. The 4 of us had 3 muffins with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream. Yum-may~

Teriyaki Chicken Salad

It wasn't easy to prepare meals and look after D at the same time. Before my lovely assistant, EF Oven, came along, TV used to babysit D while I cook. That wasn't such a good idea, though I know D enjoys TV's company.

With EF Oven's help, I can now easily pop in marinated chicken and cut-vegetables into it and leave it to do its magic. However, TV is still babysitting D. Fact is, I took a quick shower while TV entertained D... But I must say that the situation was definitely much better than before.

Today was my second attempt to cook meals with the oven. I believe with more practice, not only the chicken will turn out well done and marvelous, but also, I would have mastered the art of juggling between cooking meals and taking care of D.

Anyway, this salad turned out fine. I didn't have diarrhea after consuming it :)

D's breakfast

I don't know what came over me this morning, but I just wanted to make D a better-than-average-looking breakfast. Afterall, so much was spent on those cutters, picks and cutesy-looking forks. So, I did what I could despite all the morning madness around the house.

His menu was Cinnamon French Toast Cheese Rolls with scrambled eggs and freshly cut strawberries on the side. Sounds pretty impressive, eh? Nah. It was pretty easy. All I had was:

• One egg
• A dash of cinnamon powder
• A slice of bread (sides trimmed away)
• A slice of mozzarella cheese
• 50ml skimmed milk
• 2 strawberries, diced

And all I did was:

Add a dash of cinnamon powder to a lightly beaten egg and beat a little more.
Cut bread into 4 equal-sized strips and coat bread well in egg batter.
Brown egg-battered bread strips on heated pan (coated with cooking spray).

Trim cheese into 4 equal-sized strips too.
Place cheese onto toast-strips and roll. Secure rolls with picks.

Add skimmed milk to leftover egg batter, beat and cook on low heat.
Keep stirring until egg mixture thickens and ready to serve.

There, put all together and voila!
D enjoyed his breakfast and it made my day :)

My Shiny New Toy

I can't believe it, it's here! Yes, my long-awaited oven! I think my neck might have grown 1.5in longer, after waiting for over a year for this baby. :D

Had an impromptu baking session at Hot Mama's place yesterday. We were supposed to churn out yummilicious double choc almond muffins, but they turned out to be rock-hard muffkies (muffin cookies)...

With such failure, I am determined to put my shiny new machine to good use, to rid off all muffkies! Mwahahahaha...

It'll be wonderful if D and Cutie can join in the baking. Imagine some flour on their tiny faces. How cute.

Rekindled love

I've found my long lost love last night, after much hesitation. I've been thinking long and hard - whether to replace the existing built-in oven's heating element; get a whole new built-in oven or just a stand-alone one. To replace the heating element costs $250 and I don't know its history (it was already there when we moved in). A cheapest, brand new built-in one costs $699 after discount (it's gonna burn a huge hole in my pocket). The stand-alone type is gonna take up all the space that's left in my already-packed tiny kitchen top. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

After some negotiations with Mr. Blockhead, we decided to head down to Kallang Leisure Park to check out the ovens again. The Great Singapore Sale is on anyway. True enough, there was a greater bargain! Another model, assembled in Italy, with similar specs as the quoted $699 Electrolux model, was on sale for $490! It's still early to tell if I've hit the jackpot though. It better be churning out good stuffs. I'm eagerly awaiting for its arrival on 2 Jun! Yay~ :D

Friday the 13th: Goodbye, My Love

Today marks the day - the day when I parted with my love, Fujifilm X100. It was a love-hate relationship. Not so much of hate though, but his slow start-up and focusing really got on my nerves. Our relationship was short-lived but well-spent together. We've only been together for a month, exactly one month. We met online. He was old-school and dashing. He was so charming, he swept my feet off the ground. The next thing I knew, I was swimming in the lake of love! Day and night, I was looking forward to hold him. The day came, 13th April, when I finally held him in my hands. He was sturdy and well-built, totally gorgeous... I thought we'd never part. But, alas!

The moment we parted, I knew there was no turning back. I felt a part of me was gone. Emptiness welled up inside of me now. He will be missed. He will forever live in my heart.

Moving on, Sony Alpha 35 seems like quite a good catch and Sony Nex C3 looks cool too. But deep down I know that X100's old-school charm is unsurpassed. Sigh. I think no amount of time given is enough for me to get over him... Nevertheless, I'll mark my calendar for the announcement of Sony's new releases (it's on 3rd June by the way). ;)

26 Apr 11

The mood's so different today. What meant as a pleasant surprise turned into a sad ceremony. We attended his uncle's funeral. I could see his aunt's sorrows under her smiles as she chatted with us and played with D. No masks can ever be thick enough to hide that. His two beautiful nieces... Their once twinkling eyes looked glassy and distant. Tears must have washed away their porcelain complexions too.

Depression had driven his uncle to take this path. I can never fathom these roots of complex situations. I've always yearned to move to Korea with my family. Yet, the Koreans always tell me that it's stressful to live here. Everyone is fighting hard to make a living. Market's saturated with graduates. Being armed with a degree doesn't guarantee one with a good paying job anymore. What will D's future be like if he lives in Korea?

I see my 'picture perfect' in a different light now.

25 Apr 11 - A Bittersweet Surprise

Although Mr. Blockhead live up to this nick, he can be sweet at times too. He had wanted to give his mom a surprise visit this time.

He called up his mom this morning to tell her that we're in Korea and would be going over in the afternoon. His manly tone turned worried and solemn as he went into the third line of conversation. His sobbing mom had told him that his uncle had committed suicide last Friday...

23 Apr 11's Power Lunch

I was seriously deprived of sleep for 4 consecutive days and woke up with a bad backache this (very early) morning. That's the price I've to pay for staying over at his friend's place instead of my MIL's. I take my hat of the Koreans. How can anyone get used to sleeping on a few layers of comforters laid on the floor? Am I too pampered?

We had to meet his buddies in Anyang for lunch today and I looked like I needed a paper bag over my head. Piles of concealer couldn't hide my panda eye rings... 45 mins of driving later, a street full of cherry blossoms and delightful cafes greeted us. My fatigue was soon overcame with anticipation. Sigh... If only I could renovate my home to look like that good.

The restaurant looked so welcoming, my appetite's whet before I even knew what's on the menu.

The restaurant staffs were really thoughtful. They divided the portions for us according to how we were seated. For starters, this fresh and tangy salad sure fired up my appetite. I've never tasted any salads this good.

I'm not sure if this black sesame paste was meant to be dessert. It was served right at the beginning of our meals. Anyway, it was rich and thick, not too sweet either. Would be great if the portion's bigger. Hehe...

Yikes! Prawns on jellyfish!!! Sorry, avoided this dish but it looked gorgeous for a shoot.

Oh, I love this! It's Water Chestnut Flour Jelly. It's tasteless by itself, but careful seasoning takes it to a whole new level. Thumbs up for this one.

I'm not quite sure what's this made up of. But it's yummy anyway.

This one's superb. Under those greens laid some ultra tender and juicy sliced beef with a crispy coating. Wrap them up in the green leafy veg and smear on some mayo and special chili paste, you'll get an explosion of flavors in your mouth. Cunning Mr. Blockhead almost left none for me!

The next one, Jap Chae, looked ordinary, just like the one you could order from KimBap Nara. And yes, it tasted like one too. BUT, Jap Chae never tasted lousy before. Perhaps I haven't come across one.

The upcoming one was amazing. The pork fat literally melts in your mouth! Not to mention that its meat's tender too. And its pairing with mustard - BRILLIANT.

Call me bias. But I had to try this one. The prawn looked like the crunchy sort instead of the usual texture... And boy, I was right! Absolutely crunchy, sweet and spicy.

I never knew kimchi could look this good. They usually look messy to me. It tasted as good too. This one was the "fresh" kimchi. It hadn't been fermented for long. Hence, the cabbage still retained its sweetness and crunch.

Here's the last dish on the menu - BiBimBap. No bells and whistles, though. It tasted typical like any other BiBimBaps would.

Wow. I could barely feel my waist after we were done. Great service, great food, great ambience and most importantly, D behaved well throughout our lunch. Wonderful dining experience indeed! :D

There wasn't any better way to burn off calories other than taking a stroll under the alpine skies and cherry blossom trees after lunch. Lucky D, he had the chance to see the cherry blossoms on his first trip here! And it was my first on my 8th trip. D must be my lucky star.

22 Apr 11 - We survived!

We've managed to survive the flight and arrived at the Incheon Intl' Airport today. I've probably frightened quite a few passers-by along the way. How could I be glowing with radiance without sleep anyway?

Thankfully, D managed to catch some forty winks in the carrier as we waited for Mr. Blockhead's friend to pick us up. He's usually the one waiting for us at the airport, but this time, he didn't. He didn't know our arrival time.

That's fine. I had some breakfast as we waited (Mr. Blockhead claimed he didn't want any). Food is constantly on my mind no matter where I am or even if the sky comes crashing down. Not too far away, a cozy little cafe by the corner caught my eye...

This sandwich was really yummy! One serving just wasn't enough. You'd agree with me if you had taken a bite.

Shortly after my second helping, his friend had reached and we could finally get some decent rest at his place. :)

21 Apr 11 - THE DAY IS HERE

I was counting down to this day, but as the day draws closer, my much anticipated excitement morphed into worries.

Our flight time was 10:40pm, which was way past D's sleeping time. I thought perhaps he'll just get sooooo tired that he'll fall into a deep slumber til we touch down the next morning. I was so wrong...

He did fell asleep during take off. When the seat-belt sign was turned off, we thought he'd be more comfortable in the bassinet. Hence, we carefully moved him over. Bad move! He became so awake that he wanted to play and our countless attempts to put him back to sleep failed terribly. He cried and cried like there's no tomorrow.

The sleep battle lasted for hours - from 11pm to 3am. The 6-hour journey seemed like forever. I was so embarrassed and frustrated that I wished I could jump off the plane.

On second thoughts, poor D must have been suffering from over-tiredness. He had only 2.5 hours of nap time in the day and endured til we boarded the plane.

I'm so sorry, my darling angel...

Breakfast with Old Buddies at Old Airport Road Food Centre

Had been looking forward to visit this much talked about food centre. The timing couldn't have been better especially after I've gotten my dream X100. And having coffee talks and trying out good food with old pals - it's icing on top. The khakis were namely: Lonewolf, Red Star and Mr. Sexy (well, sort of).

The 3 guys were late, but that bought me time to recce the place. Many stalls weren't opened though I spotted a few that caught my interest. First on my list was Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun (#01-155); then the taiwanese bao with meat and mushroom fillings from Momo's Mini Pau (#01-44), followed by Jia Mei Zi Zhi Mian Bao egg tarts (#01-43). I guess the most outstanding stall was Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee. It had a queue that never ends! Though tempted to try, I was hesitant to join the queue.

After the 3 musketeers arrived, we wasted no time to grab our chow. Lonewolf bought Whitley Road Big Prawn Mee (#01-98), coffee bao and otah; Red Star gotten Char Kway Teow and Kway Chap; Mr. Sexy - Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun with prawn and char siew fillings; and I myself got the egg tarts and the taiwanese bao.

The egg tarts were a tad too sweet for my liking. I was drawn to them because the egg custard portions looked generous. However, the custard texture was more like agar-agar rather than soft, pudding-like. Its crust was ok, not too thick, but don't expect the melt-in-the-mouth experience.

Char siew chee cheong fun didn't disappoint. A generous portion of the char siew fillings would have been a good complement to the smooth, thin chee cheong fun skin, though. And oh, not forgetting heaps of fried scallions too.

Taiwanese bao wasn't as fanciful as its name suggested to be. Filling tasted mediocre as compared to the Godzilla Bao. I guess it was its chewy bao skin that scored.

Coffee bao is something I couldn't afford to miss. Thanks to Lonewolf, I had an opportunity to try one that's worth gobbling down a dozen. Its chewy skin was paired with aromatic coffee lotus paste. Ah~ Heavenly!

Last but not least, my nemesis - Char Kway Teow. I love and hate it. Why, oh why was it made so fattening? I hadn't had one in years! Just a few spoonfuls wouldn't hurt... And then another few more... Gosh. I swear I would've had the whole plate of it myself if it wasn't for the cockles laid in wait.

I was too full to try the kway chap. As I'm not a seafood lover, I gave the prawn noodles a miss too. Lonewolf's comments here should provide a more balanced insight. :)

Pooh Sandwich breakfast

Ordered the Pooh sandwich mould cutter sometime ago. Have yet to tried it since D wasn't so keen on having bread. And what's worse was, he had a bad cough last week. But I'm really eager to try it, even if it's meant for myself.

After scrambling through the kitchen to pack lunchbox for hubby and greeted goodbye, I decided to give the dust-covered cutter a try.

The cutter's sharp, compared to some other cutters that I've bought from Daiso. However, the bread I have was a tad too small for it.

Nonetheless, D managed to eat half of it. Wasn't a bad try. Perhaps toasting it under a minute would've given Pooh a nice tan.

Vanity = Sanity

When I received the "Fashion Bazaar Sale" brochure, I knew I had to check it out, especially when it's just a stone-throw away.

As much as I love being with D, I needed a teeny-weeny-tiny-little-harmless retail therapy to help keep my sanity. Oh, did I mention that D is turning Terrible-Two?

Thankfully, my mom's babysitting D today while I went for my well-deserved therapy. The session was quick, much to my surprise - there was no office crowd :)

In just under an hour, I've managed to bag 5 pieces of garments (worth $101) for just under $50. That's insane!!!

But hey, it helped keep my sanity ^-^v

April 13, 2011

At long last!

So so so so sorry for such a late virgin post. Had so much going on: taking care of D, make dinner, prepare for hubby's lunchbox, read up on parenting while D sleeps, cracking my head over what kinda design I want for my blog... Yeah, and the list goes on.

Shall make do with this design for now. Was hoping to wait for a Wacom (to draw some silly illustrations), yet another part of me yearned for the Fujifilm X100. Sadly, tragedy happened to Japan on the same day I paid for the camera. After waiting painstakingly for a month, X100 finally arrived onto our shore & safely into my hands.

I've no pictures to upload for now, but soon, I hope. Last but not least, I'm keeping Japan in my prayers. May the Lord show them mercy.
